Ejaculation problems are not uncommon. There are three main types:
- Premature ejaculation (PE) is where you ejaculate quickly and sooner than you or your partner wishes.
Most cases of PE are caused simply by being unable to control the ejaculatory response. Erection problems (see erectile dysfunction) may play a part, as some men ejaculate early if they think they might lose their erection. It is usually possible to help yourself to delay ejaculation, either with guided self-help or some professional support. - Delayed ejaculation is where you experience a significant delay or are unable to ejaculate at all. This can be due to psychological or physical factors and can be helped by sex therapy, switching medication, or decreasing alcohol and drug use.
- Retrograde ejaculation is where semen travels backwards into the bladder instead of being projected outward. This can cause cloudy urine after sex. This condition does not pose a danger to health, but can affect fertility. It is nearly always a result of physical conditions (such as diabetes), medication, or physical treatments to the pelvis (for example, for prostate disease).
